Starring: Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, Kris Kristofferson, N’Bushe Wright

Director: Stephen Norrington

Synopsis: Blade is a Dhampir, a human with vampire abilities but not their weaknesses; He protects humanity from vampires. This movie kicked off the superhero genre in many ways, laying the ground work for future Marvel movies. The movie starts off with Blade trailing a vampire into a nightclub, where it’s a “blood party” a large rave like party for vampires. Blade interrupts the party and kills most of the vampires, except one that is taken to the hospital by the police, at the hospital the vampire bites Karen (N’Bushe Wright) and Blade who gets flashbacks of his mother decides to save her and take her back to the safe house. While all this is going on there is an undertaking happening within the ranks of the vampire elite, a new and younger vampire by the name of Frost is eliminating the old guard and taking over, with a plan to take the powers of the blood god (La Magra). Later Karen is taken back by Frost and to the Temple of Eternal Night, where Blade follows to rescue her, while there he is captured and drained of all his blood, allowing Frost to complete the ceremony and gain the powers of La Magra. Karen in a desperate attempt to save Blade allows him to feed on her blood, giving him a more enhanced version of his abilities. Eventually destroying Frost with the vaccine created by Karen.

Review: This movie holds up pretty well almost 25 years later, I watch it just about everytime it’s on TV. Wesley Snipes absolutely kills it as Blade. He has such an incredible presence about him when he’s in character. Kris Kristofferson also plays a great side kick role in this providing some witty comebacks and comedy to the movie. I also think that Stephen Dorff plays a great villain who you love to hate. If you take into consideration the time period and effects available to the creators it’s a pretty fun watch, and overall enjoyable experience. This is Wesley Snipes at his best, and was good enough to spawn two sequels from this origin.

Favorite Scene: The opening scene in the night club, with the blood and all the vampires showing their teeth is very memorable, as they chase after an unlucky human. Just as they are about to catch him in walks Blade and he completely wrecks everyone. It’s one of my favorite openings in an action movie.

Recommendation: If you enjoy monsters, and monster hunters, then you will enjoy this movie. Blade is a kick ass, take no prisoners character who commands respect and is feared by all vampires. Give this movie a watch!

Thank you
