Starring: Ben Affleck, Janina Gavankar, Al Madrigal, Michaela Watkins
Director: Gavin O’Connor
Synopsis: Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck) takes over the High School basketball team he starred for in the 90’s, while dealing with his alcoholism, the team begins to turn their season around and Jack starts to make strides with his drinking. Life then throws Jack and the team a curveball making each wonder what the next step is. Can the team make the playoffs? And can Jack continue down the road of sobriety?
Review: This is more than a basketball movie! While it does have the stereotypical bad team turns good after adding the right coach. Ben Affleck’s performance helps you overlook that common theme and look deeper. His inner struggles and alcoholism turns this movie on its side and changes the usual narrative. While the basketball scenes and everything were very well done and executed well, the real story is Ben Affleck’s redemption from functioning angry alcoholic, to a sober coach, who slips up and relapses to only move onto the next phase of his life in rehab. I thought Ben’s wife in the movie Janina Gavankar did a great job as an outlet for Ben’s characters emotions. Overall this was a really great movie, that happened to be about a basketball player and coach.
Favorite Scene: To not spoil anything, I will pick the reoccurring theme of Ben Affleck cursing and going off on the officials in front of the “Father” who sits with the team and prays with the team before games. His face everytime Ben’s character curses is hilarious.
Recommendation: I personally really enjoyed Ben Affleck’s performance in this movie, and i believe if you are a fan of him or know anyone who struggles with an addiction and who is fighting a battle, then this movie is for you. Go check it out in theatres! It’s worth the ticket price!
