Synopsis: Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) is a high end jewelry seller in the diamond district of New York City, he also happens to be a gambling addict, who would rather gamble his last dollar than pay off his growing debt to loan sharks and pawn shops. Until one day Kevin Garnett (himself) walks into his shop looking to buy jewelry. While getting ready to exit the shop Howie receives a package that will change his life! An uncut gem from a mine in Ethiopia, KG immediately feels a connection to the gym and wants to buy it, but Howie can’t sell it. So instead they trade for the night, the gem for KG’s championship ring; in which Howie pawns for gambling money. Getting him into even deeper issues with his loan shark. Through a crazy few days, and multiple run ins with the muscle of the loan sharks, Howie gets the gem back and looks to auction it off, but his plan goes sideways and he begins to get desperate. Finally he sells the gem to KG for a hefty price, but instead of paying back the sharks, he goes all in on one final mega bet! A true life or death gamble.
Review: This is the best Adam Sandler movie there’s ever been, he is completely locked in and is so engaging you can’t help but root for his sleazy schemes to work. I would not be surprised if he gets nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars. It blew my mind how good he was in this movie, it felt like a career defining role for Sandler. I had to sit for a few minutes in the theater and decompress from the roller coaster ride we were taken on. Not to mention that Kevin Garnett albeit playing himself was also great. The whole movie felt so real, Adam Sandler became Howard Ratner degenerate gambler. It’s my favorite movie of 2019, and it really is making me rethink some of my Oscar predictions. Uncut Gems could go down as a classic, touching every base possible, drama, levity, unpredictability, everything possible worked in creating this movie!
Favorite Scene: In this scene Howard (Sandler) is selling this gem too KG, and goes on a tandem speech about how in his world of jewelry and acquiring jewelry is like Kevin playing in high pressure basketball games. And just the way he describes and pulls KG in is awesome.
Recommendation: GO SEE IT, it’s not an exaggeration when i say this is peak Adam Sandler, you’ll probably never see him this good again. It is well worth the price of admission!
